Member-only story
On face value World Trigger is about as standard as Shonen manga go. The premise is this; humanity is beset upon by extra-terrestrial monsters and enemies. Coming up to their defense is the agency Border and their super powered abilities called Triggers. The main plot begins with young Border agent Osamu Mikumo meeting Neighbor humanoid and skilled fighter Yuma Kuga and befriends him. Outside of the partnership between Mikumo and his people’s enemy Kuga, this is about as standard a plot you can get in manga. What separates World Trigger from the rest of is it’s love of tactics and strategy.
SRPG: The Manga
World Trigger is about as close as you’ll get to an SRPG (Strategy Role Playing Game) you’ll get in manga. Despite the heady premise of marauding invaders from another world, the tone of World Trigger is surprisingly light and breezy. Fights against one another are presented like video game matches, complete with characters discussing their Trigger loadout abilities. This is most prevalent in the Rank Wars arcs where Border agents face off amongst each other improve and rank up.
