The Thrilling Horrific Build up in Metroid: Other M

Nintendo’s much loved Metroid series has always had it’s roots firmly planted in horror. Ridley Scott’s movie, Alien being such a big influence that they would go on to name one of the major bosses after him. Since the first game in 1988, the series has reveled in unnerving it’s players. Dropping Samus into hostile alien worlds by herself, armed with just her arm cannon. Metroid relied less on jump scares and gore to frighten their players. Instead, it used the atmosphere to make Samus’ journey as isolating, tense, and dreadful as possible.

Background

In 2010, Nintendo with Team Ninja released Metroid: Other M. Riding high after the Metroid Prime series, they had to decide where to take the series next. The new direction would take them to make a 3D action game with a much bigger focus on the narrative than any game before it. All while combining the platforming and first person elements from past games to make a new action hybrid.

Sadly, Other M was poorly received by fans and critics alike. The action gameplay shifts divided players and the narrative was near…
