I comeback to this classic anime series from my childhood that was far ahead of its time.
Intro
Today I want to revisit a lesser known anime by the name of Martian Successor Nadesico. Watching it as a kid on public access channel, this weird mecha anime was ahead of it’s time. Weird, dramatic, and tonally all over the place; this odd little anime still clings onto my memory. The story is this; the year is 2196 and Earth is at war against alien invaders called the Jovian Lizards. The crew of the Nadesico, a super advanced ship, fight against them as humanities’ greatest hope.
The crew of the Nadesico is filled with quirky and off kilter characters. From the ditzy captain Yurika Misumaru, to the mecha otaku pilot Gai Daigoji, to Megumi Reinard a former voice actress turned communication officer, to the ship’s own emotionless robot girl Ruri Hoshino. Our protagonist is Akito Tenkawa, a chef who hates fighting and fears the invaders with every bone in his body. But fate leads him to become a pilot of an Aestevalis, the show’s mecha. A pretty basic mecha plot set up by all accounts but Martian Successor Nadesico is anything but basic.
